Harvest 2008 Update - by the Columbia Gorge Winegrowers association:
Harvest Update: The 2008 Harvest report from the Columbia Gorge Winegrowers was an overall success despite the unusual weather this past growing season. The warm and then cool and then late spring led to an uneven bloom with light fruit set. The summer was spectacular. Veraison (color change of the grape berry) occurred ten days later then normal.

The Western Gorge experienced two October rains which did more to revitalize the vines than damper fruit quality. Spotty mid-October frosts damaged some less protected vineyards.

Harvest showed average to above average sugars and brilliant acids overall. Pinot Noir showed excellent color, classic cherry, pie cherry and rhubarb flavors and aromas. Gewurztraminer had average sugars, crisp acids, great spice and length. Chardonnays showed lime and apple flavors and great acids. Yields were below average in the 1 - 1.5 tons per acre range. The harvest finished around Halloween, for the most part in the Western Gorge, with harvest of Sangiovese, Barbera and Nebbiolo continuing into mid-November in the Eastern Gorge. The report from the member wineries and vineyards is that it was a very short and condensed harvest.

The Columbia Gorge Winegrowers Association is a nonprofit group of local wineries, grape growers, and wine-related businesses from the Columbia Gorge and Columbia Valley Appellations. Together, the 60+ members of the association promote the award- winning wines and grapes of the Columbia River Gorge region.
